ASME SB167 N06601 Nickel Alloy Steel Heat Exchanger Tube , Petrochemical Industry

ASME SB167 N06601 Nickel Alloy Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes are highly resistant to both high-temperature oxidation and corrosion in aggressive chemical environments. Its superior properties make it a preferred material in critical industries like chemical processing, petrochemical refining, power generation, aerospace, and marine applications. The alloy’s excellent weldability, mechanical strength, and long-term durability ensure its performance in systems where both high temperatures and corrosive substances are involved.

Chemical Composition:

  • Nickel (Ni): ~ 53% (main component)
  • Chromium (Cr): ~ 21-25%
  • Iron (Fe): ~ Balance
  • Molybdenum (Mo): ~ 1-2%
  • Copper (Cu): ~ 0.5-2.5%
  • Titanium (Ti): ~ 0.4-1%
  • Others: Small amounts of Silicon (Si), Manganese (Mn), and Carbon (C) to enhance performance

Mechanical Properties:

The material exhibits good tensile strength and yield strength at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for systems subject to mechanical stresses. It has a typical tensile strength range of 70-100 ksi (480-690 MPa) and yield strength in the range of 30-60 ksi (205-410 MPa).

Key Features:

  • Corrosion Resistance: The high nickel content provides excellent resistance to oxidizing environments and reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, and acetic acid. This alloy is known for its resistance to both general corrosion and pitting corrosion. It is especially effective in acidic environments that involve chlorides and sulfides.

  • Oxidation Resistance: ASME SB167 N06601 is highly resistant to oxidation at high temperatures, up to approximately 1000°C (1832°F). This makes it ideal for use in applications involving exposure to high-temperature gases or fluids.

  • High-Temperature Strength: This alloy retains its mechanical strength even at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for heat exchangers and furnace components in industries where high temperatures are typical.

  • Formability and Weldability: The material offers good weldability, which is essential for fabricating complex shapes in the form of tubes and pipes. It can be welded using conventional methods, such as TIG and MIG welding, without the risk of cracking, provided proper procedures are followed.

  • Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance: The addition of titanium helps to significantly reduce the risk of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which is crucial for applications involving high temperatures and corrosive environments.

Physical Properties:

  • Density: ~ 8.89 g/cm³

  • Melting Point: Approx. 1350°C (2462°F)

  • Thermal Conductivity: Typically around 9.5 W/m·K (depends on temperature)

  • Thermal Expansion: About 13.5 × 10^-6 /°C

  • Electrical Resistivity: 0.99 μΩ·cm at 20°C

Applications:

Chemical Processing Industry:

  • Heat exchangers: Used in heat exchangers handling oxidizing and reducing chemicals in chemical reactors, where resistance to aggressive acids and high temperatures is required.

  • Sulfuric Acid Processing: Due to its resistance to sulfuric acid, it is used in systems where sulfuric acid is handled, such as in sulfuric acid production or pharmaceutical manufacturing.

  • Chlorine and Chlorine Derivatives: ASME SB167 N06601 is widely used in chlorine production systems, where exposure to chlorine and its byproducts occurs at high temperatures.

Petrochemical and Refining Industry:

  • Heat Exchangers and Boilers: The alloy is used in refining processes involving petroleum and natural gas, especially in systems where high temperatures and aggressive environments are common. For example, it is used in crude oil distillation, dehydrogenation units, and alkylation units.

  • Hydroprocessing Equipment: ASME SB167 N06601 is ideal for use in hydroprocessing reactors, such as those used for hydrocracking, where corrosive gases and liquids are prevalent.

Pharmaceutical Industry:

  • Heat Exchangers in Pharmaceutical Processing: In the pharmaceutical industry, where high-purity processes are crucial, N06601 is used in heat exchangers, cooling systems, and sterilization systems that must withstand corrosion from chemicals used in drug production.
